Find out how Napa County folks are working together to form a more sustainable local food system at Napa’s “Food Day” on Oct. 24.

The Napa Local Food Advisory Council is hosting the event, an educational food forum, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Yountville Community Center, 6516 Washington Street in Yountville. Attendees can also meet the members of the Local Food Advisory Council and find out what the Council has been working on since the April 2010 Local Food Forum.

The event is an opportunity to explore and celebrate the abundance of local food, local family farms and farmers’ markets, along with the Napa California restaurants, grocers, and organizations that support them.

Local food supporters aim to increase interest in healthy foods, sustainable principles and a wellness lifestyle, as well as promote healthy, locally grown food that all Napa County residents can afford. The event’s goal is to increase understanding of the ways we grow our food, distribute our food products and support our local food sources. It will also provide a forum to discuss the importance of growing the local food movement to sustaining our environment, stimulating our local economy and providing alternatives to curb the increase of food-related health problems.

Call to Action
How can we create a more sustainable local food system? The Advisory Council will give a report on strategies that are under way, plus answer questions and hear the perspective of attendees. Following the formal presentation, the public is invited to a networking event with wine and food from local food purveyors and growers. Share your ideas and learn how to become more active in the local food/farming movement while tasting locally sourced and prepared food.

The Food Council is supported by many Napa County departments and staff, including Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith; Director of Conservation, Development and Planning Hillary Gitelman; Director of Environmental Management Steve Lederer; Director of the Napa County University of California Cooperative Extension Dr. Monica Cooper; and Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer Dave Whitmer. This event is sponsored in part by the County of Napa, Napa Valley College and Yountville Parks & Recreation Department.
